Basketball Mom Basics: Key Terms Every New Basketball Mom Should Know (AAU + Youth Basketball Parent Guide)

When my son first started playing competitive basketball, another parent casually asked me, “What position does he play?”

I smiled… and panicked 😅

If you’ve ever sat in the bleachers nodding along while silently Googling basketball terms, this guide is for you.

If you’re new to youth basketball—especially AAU—you are not alone. The sport comes with its own language, and no one hands you a glossary at the door. This post is for the moms who are learning in real time, just like I did.

Let’s break down the key basketball terms every new basketball mom should know, without the overwhelm.

Basketball Positions (The Question That Gets Everyone)

At younger ages, kids often play multiple positions, so it’s okay if the answer changes—or if you’re still figuring it out.

  • Point Guard (PG): Runs the offense, brings the ball up the court, makes plays for others.
  • Shooting Guard (SG): Strong scorer and outside shooter.
  • Small Forward (SF): Versatile player—can score, defend, and rebound.
  • Power Forward (PF): Physical player who rebounds and scores inside and mid-range.
  • Center (C): Usually the tallest player; protects the rim and rebounds.

Basketball Mom Tip: If someone asks and you’re unsure, “He plays multiple positions” is a perfectly acceptable answer.

Basketball IQ (It’s Not Just About Skill)

When coaches talk about Basketball IQ, they mean:

  • Making smart decisions
  • Knowing where to be on the court
  • Reading the game

A high Basketball IQ can sometimes matter more than raw talent, especially as kids get older.

Playing Time & Coach Language

These are terms you’ll hear a lot—especially during AAU season:

  • Minutes: How long a player is on the court during a game.
  • Rotation: The order in which players sub in and out.
  • Starter: Player who begins the game.
  • Bench Player: Player who comes in as a substitute.

Hard Truth (but helpful): Equal playing time is not guaranteed in AAU.

Defense Terms You’ll Hear From the Sidelines

  • Man-to-Man Defense: Each player guards one specific opponent.
  • Zone Defense: Players guard a specific area of the court.
  • Press: Aggressive defense designed to force turnovers.

Common “Coach Speak” (Decoded)

  • “Be aggressive” → Shoot the ball. Make a move.
  • “Let the game come to you” → Stop forcing plays.
  • “Next play” → Shake it off and move forward.
  • “Play your role” → Focus on what the team needs you to do.

Final Word for New Basketball Moms
